Sam got the fright of his life when he was diagnosed with Diabetes, he knew changes had to be made or he would end up in a wheelchair with an amputation, or worse! Sam’s doctor ordered him to lose weight and start eating healthily, the alternative was to spend a lifetime dependent on medication. Sam registered for the Gi plan in an effort to control his Diabetes and lose weight. He lost 2 stone 13 lbs through making small lifestyle changes and all the hard work paid off, Sam is currently free from Diabetes symptoms.
Here Sam tells us how he battled his Diabetes diagnosis…
What made you decide to join us?
I lost feeling in my toes, and the doctor told me I was diabetic and if I didn’t sort my diet and exercise levels I would be on medication for life. Failing that I would probably go blind and suffer all sorts of complications.
Have you previously tried any other diets and were they successful?
I tried a ‘no fat, no sugar, no alcohol and moderate carbs diet. The weight did come off, but then people told me I looked ill and I thought ‘What the hell’ and it all went back on.
Describe your diet before you joined us?
I’ve always enjoyed food and particularly, hearty casseroles and pork pies. I eat much less red meat now and I include more green vegetables into my meals. I also eat less dairy now.
Have you enjoyed the diet plan?
The meal plans were great, and I loved the weigh in.
What difference has losing weight made to you?
My cholesterol and blood sugars are back to normal (better than most of the non-diabetic population, in fact, according to the clinic). I have no more back problems. My weight gave my knees a hard time over the years, one has worn out and needs to be replaced. However the weight loss has probably given me 5 more years with my original knee.
And finally do you have any tips or comments you would like to give?
Don’t drink more than a glass of wine a day, as you won’t lose weight!
